Formative Assessment
When assessing students, it is important for educators to use formative assessments during instruction that will provide the educator with feedback so the educator can adjust future instruction thereby improving students' achievement of the intended outcomes. Here are a few examples of formative assessments that educators can use during instruction. We have included sites, files, and presentations so you can choose which information will help you best.
Note: "Type III Assessment means any assessment that is rigorous, that is aligned to the course’s curriculum, and that the qualified evaluator and teacher determine measures student learning in that course. Examples include teacher-created assessments, assessments designed by textbook publishers, student work samples or portfolios, assessments of student performance, and assessments designed by staff who are subject or grade-level experts that are administered commonly across a given grade or subject. A Type I or Type II assessment may qualify as a Type III assessment if it aligns to the curriculum being taught and measures student learning in that subject area." (see IL Admin. Code Part 50, Sub. A, Sec. 50.30)

Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA)
In 2010, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA), which changed how teachers’ and principals’ performance is measured in the state. The new evaluation systems in Illinois school districts will combine multiple measures of student growth and professional practice. The evaluations will be based on standards of effective teaching, with evaluators trained and prequalified to conduct observations, collect evidence, and provide helpful feedback in a timely way.
Hand-in-hand with the new evaluations, school systems will be expected to strengthen their professional development offerings so that educators get the support they need to help their students improve.
